Week 3: Taking Shape - Part 1

As the first stage of this weeks work, I took an A6 piece of card, and used it to make a circle of blue card. I then created a series of photos, and an animation, to explore the ways that it connects with its environment in a photograph, as well as the connections the viewer makes when it is observed. These were my results.

I like the way that the cold blue shades contrast with the natural green tones and striking reds of the flowers. It evokes images of man made clashing with nature, with blue being a fairly uncommon colour in the natural world. The shape too is incongruous to its surroundings, and this aids that feeling of contrast. The photo with the rock evokes ideas about planetary bodies and celestial creations. When placed beside the match, and again in the burning photos and animations, it gives rise to ideas about fragility and vulnerability. The inclusion of man made objects makes the reader ponder how man made shapes connect and communicate with each other as a result of their creation. The angle of the shape as well helps to accentuate the shapes of other objects surrounding it such as the curves of the candles, or the hard angles of the nails.
