Week 3: Taking Shape - Part 2

My response to this week is dictated by my interest in the interactions between man made and natural shape and colour. I have a curiosity concerning the ways increasing abstraction can help to reveal the contrasting elements of objects, such as difference in colour, by gradually stripping back aspects that distract from it, such as marks and refined shape. This progression is captured in my work below. The inspiration for the abstract style here is the work of Franz Kline, such as this piece called "Chief", which falls into abstract expressionism, and captures a raw feeling that I wanted to convey in my own work.

These were my responses:

For me, this order reveals an interesting idea concerning the idea of decay or assimilation, as if nature is overcoming the unnatural blues. This combined with the deterioration of the shape of the circle, and the progressive abstraction, gives this order an interest to the viewer. That said, what happens to the meanings and relationships between the pieces when they are placed in different positions or beside others?

When these two versions are placed beside one anther, they show an awareness of the way that the man made world deteriorates and is consumed by the natural one. The black seems to have destroyed the order and shape of the blue, and this seems particularly emphasized when placed beside the control and cleanliness of the 2nd photo.

When these two versions are placed beside one another, they reveal that same deterioration as before, by utilizing the same exact colour pallet, with the colors appearing in the same places, but with one symbolizing a sense of order and harmony, and the other resembling a sense of decay or chaos. This happens due to the relationship that seems to form between them when they are placed together like this.
